What is a Dieta?

A Unique Experience. An Uncommon Commitment.

More than 14 days in Peru

A traditional Amazonian dieta is a practice of spiritual development and healing through master plant-based learning. It combines dietary restrictions, a period of physical isolation, ceremonial practices, and guidance from experienced Indigenous healers. Rooted in ancestral wisdom, the dieta fosters a deeper connection with master teacher plants through dreams, reflection, and spiritual experiences. Specific dietary and lifestyle restrictions continue for a designated period of time after the physical dieta journey ends as a participant returns to their daily life.

Our 14-Day Dieta takes place on the 80-acre family compound owned by shaman Don Miguel Tapullima and his family. A 4-hour river crossing and hike through the river and mountainside of Alto Shilcayo National Park outside Tarapoto, Peru takes you to a breathtaking view of the San Martín rainforest from Don Miguel's home - Juliampampa. Here you will disconnect from your daily life to reconnect with nature and your true self during several days of peaceful introspection.

The Hike

Reaching the Dieta location requires a 2–3 hour hike through Alto Shilcayo National Park, crossing the Shilcayo River multiple times, followed by a 1–2 hour uphill mountain trek. Rubber boots are provided and recommended for all participants. Due to the challenging terrain, this experience is not recommended for individuals with limited mobility or difficulty navigating uneven, wet surfaces, natural steps, and steep inclines.

The Stay

Each participant will stay in a private tambo, a traditional Amazonian shelter constructed from wood with screened walls and ceilings, a tin roof, and an open-air design. Each tambo is furnished with a twin bed and mosquito net, desk, chair, and a hammock on the covered front deck for relaxing outdoors. Additional amenities include a bottled water dispenser, cups, candles, and matches, with a private composting outhouse just steps away. Nestled within the rainforest, these rustic accommodations provide a peaceful space for solitude, reflection, and connection with nature throughout the sacred Dieta experience.

This remote rainforest location offers a rustic, off-grid experience without electricity or modern conveniences. Solar-powered outlets are available in the kitchen for charging small electronic devices, while bathing options include an enclosed shower at the main building or a refreshing natural waterfall. Eco-friendly soaps and shampoos are provided by the Dieta hosts. Meals are freshly prepared on a traditional wood-burning stove, with ingredients brought in daily, as there is no refrigeration. Daily handwash and line hang laundry services are provided by the Dieta staff. This simple, nature-centered environment encourages participants to disconnect from everyday distractions and reconnect with the rhythms of the rainforest.

Before & After

Before and after the rainforest Dieta experience, participants will enjoy two nights at a comfortable ecolodge in Tarapoto, just 10 minutes from the entrance to Alto Shilcayo National Park. Each morning, a Dieta-aligned breakfast, freshly squeezed juice, and tea will be provided, with laundry services available for a nominal fee. The ecolodge is conveniently located just minutes from restaurants and shopping by mototaxi, with neighborhood stores within walking distance for purchasing water, snacks, and other essentials.

Explore the vibrant culture of Tarapoto with guided visits to local botanicas, colorful open-air markets, and shops featuring natural medicines, Indigenous crafts, jewelry, and clothing. Discover the city's historic landmarks, sample the sights and flavors of local life, and enjoy opportunities for unique gift shopping. On the final evening, gather for a special group dinner at a local restaurant to celebrate and close the formal Dieta experience together.
